Bathroom Remodel | Elk River, MN by Erin Jackson

Finally, the LAST major project in our “Fixer Upper” is FINISHED! Our Bathroom Remodel | Elk River, MN is quite the transformation! Almost 7 years since we closed on the 1971 4-Level Split, we can proudly say EVERY part of this home has been remodeled, improved or replaced!

Plan: Update Master Bathroom

  • demo and gut the entire bathroom
  • improve the existing layout
  • expand showering space
  • add more lighting throughout the room
  • design 2 separate vanities: 1 for the girls 1 for the boys

Before and After

Every project in this home has always been about maximizing our space, making the room functional for our growing family and showcasing my Husband and his Family’s amazing craftsmanship and carpentry skills.

October 2010 we closed on our house and the remodeling process began! I still think we were crazy to tackle this beast…

Posted by Erin Jackson on Friday, February 8, 2013

Demo day couldn’t come soon enough. We had several plumbing and lighting deficiencies as well as many aging and ventilation concerns.

I challenged my Husband to go above and beyond when designing our cabinetry and vanities. With each project, I wanted him to think of our house as a Franklin Builders Cabinetry Showroom. Most of our home has Oak Woodwork to stay true to the homes original build date. We didn’t want to go too far off track and wanted to stay within the oak family. Beautiful quarter sawn oak cabinetry was designed to perfection. Mikey created 2 vanity masterpieces.

We decided to downsize to one sink and create an upper cabinetry piece to enclose the lovely mosaic tile and hold can lighting in the soffit. Our painter finished the wood in a custom stain blend he described as “smoky and milky” which emulates both gray and warm tones from the mosaic tile

We accented the routed drawer edges with a metallic glaze to give dimension and make the edges pop. He finished by clear coating the wood for a soft matted look. We installed soft close drawers in a bumped out inset style.

Bright polished nickel pulls and knobs give a warm yet highly reflective finish. The Makeup vanity boasts 12 soft close drawers and sconce lighting sure to make the girl’s of the house feel glamorous and organized in our very own space!

The sconces, chandelier, rustic vanity mirror and glass under mount sink were all purchased at  This amazing home design resource cut my shopping time in half when searching for arabesque style details to finish off this space.

All tile, knobs and pulls were purchased from our local Elk River Menards. The gorgeous glass and stone mosaic tile stopped me in my tracks and inspired me to build off of all of its glorious details. Our Marble countertops were chosen onsite at our local supplier Exquisite Stone Plumbing fixtures are from Kohler’s Devonshire line in the Vibrant Polished Nickel finish. Maximizing tub and showering space was achieved by installing a curved tub and curved curtain rod.

The end results are better than I could have ever imagined. It’s pretty easy to design a space when your Husband says you can pick whatever you want as long as you love it-he will build it. The ONLY thing he said he wanted was shiplap on the ceiling. I admit, I fought him on this. I thought it would be too much in a small space. To be honest, it is my favorite part of the whole bathroom. Probably because it was an unexpected surprise from a very talented guy. Knotty pine shiplap was painted to match the white subway tile and Mikey finished it off by installing oak trim.

Many labors of Love are shown in this space. We are incredibly grateful to work with so many talented people that made this project possible!

We truly couldn’t do any of this without you all. Our dream of creating our Forever Home in Elk River, MN is definitely a dream that has come true. Every day I am so grateful we decided to tackle this beast of a house and turn it into our own.

Andover, Minnesota | Basement Bar

Build it, and they will come. This dream bar and basement located in Andover, MN is everything “Minnesota Nice” and “Hospitality” has to offer.

Cabinetry is our specialty, and there is nothing we love more than creating a space in your home to entertain!

Before and After
Before and After
Before and After

Kitchens are the heart of the home, and home bars are where memories of a lifetime are made.

We were called to finish this space and it was an honor to create a place for family and friends to gather.

We have known this family and their extended family for a decade. We renovated their Kitchen in 2014.

Rustic alder shaker style cabinetry, tin ceiling tiles and hammered copper acents are charming farmhouse features adding so much character and texture to this unique and exciting kitchen!

Hand scraped hickory flooring in a natural finish brightens the kitchen space which looks amazing with the circular sawn pine used throughout the amazing basement transformation.

The homeowners wanted this space to feel like a vintage bar hangout to display their collection of Iconic Minnesota barware and signage.

We used knotty alder in the same stain and finish as the kitchen for the main bar cabinetry and accents.

The bar design is perfection! Open glass shelving for display and glass door beverage refrigerators above the counter so guests can see what is an availaible refreshment option.

Keg refrigeration was added to the base cabinetry layout with space for the collected pilsner glassware above the tap.

There is also plenty of open display atop the bar so guests have their choice of rail drinks, coffee drinks or a snack.

This curved lid sliding freezer on the lower side of the bartop allows little guests to choose a frozen treat or ice cream!

What was once a crawl space is now an incredible built in wine storage cabinet with 2 seperate wine refrigerators.

Before and After

Storage space is still accessible through our custom made barn style doors.

Before and After

To call this space by any other name would be a disapointment. “Rathskeller” is a name in German-speaking countries for a bar or restaurant located in a basement.

Another custom made barn door slides for access to the laundry room next to the solid alder door leading to the bathroom.

Another specialty cabinet was built with use in mind and well thought out by the homeowners.

This alder entertaiment cabinet is backed with the rustic pine and has a solid granite top where vintage records can be played without vibration from the elaborate speaker system.

Circular sawn pine lines the ceiling and wraps the perimeter of the room. Duct work was carefully covererd with alternating layouts and cuts.

Several electrical outlets were added to display the neon signs without seeing cords and plugins.

Tremendous detail went into installing this woodwork properly. Our talented carpenters skill and expertise shine in every area.

Dark laminate flooring mirrors the natural hickory in the kitchen, adding contrast and warmth to the room.

This space is so incredibe, it’s hard to believe how far it has come in a few short months.

Before and After

After years of collecting, this space was a dream in the making for many years. The attention to detail shows this couple knew exactly how their vision could come to life and be a place for gathering, fun and laughter.

New Home Construction | Otsego, MN

At Franklin Builders we are your New Home Construction Otsego, MN Custom Home Builders. Your design. Your choices. Your home.

Unique and timeless for everyday living our custom Otsego, MN rambler is an example of modern family living with a personal, custom touch.

This Twin Cities Metro Area home was built and designed with family and trends in mind.

Traditional and rustic wood finishes and a unique blend of metals and surface features flow beautifully through each room in this airy, Wright County rambler.

Entering the home, views of the backyard lot are visible from tall windows throughout the main level.

Expansive views end with patio doors atop the stairwell leading to the basement, additional walkout access and the bonus bedroom above the garage.

The cozy fireplace and incredible wall unit immediately invite you into the living area from the main entrance.

The painted and stained fireplace cabinetry is styled to perfection.

This is the focal point that ties the entire home design together, right in the heart of the home.

This cabinetry unit was built into the wall and was installed at staggered depths for design and dimension covering one large wall.

The Fireplace and TV unit take center stage accompanied by bookcase style cabinets painted in white.

Our classic Franklin touch using quatersawn oak compliments the warm neutral stone fireplace and white cabinets.

The gorgeous flooring installed through the main living area is white oak in a custom matte stained finish.

Our carpenters are not limited to cabinets! We built and designed this custom dining room table stained to match the same finish as the flooring.

The rustic stain blend used for the flooring and table is also an accent tone found throughout the granite counter tops and barn door of the walk-in kitchen pantry.

The farmhouse sink is accented by a ledge cut into the granite countertop adding custom flare in an unexpected way.

Upper and base cabinets in the kitchen were constructed from quatersawn oak with inset, raised panel doors.

The glass pendants offer subtle style and trend without overpowering the bold detail of the custom built cabinetry.

Oil rubbed bronze cabinet pulls bring out the dark tones found naturally within the grooves of the designer doors.

A custom refrigerator was installed with matching door and drawer panels that were meant to cover the surface and blend with the wall of cabinetry.

The white center island allows in-kitchen seating while also providing multi-functional use for large cookware storage and the rangetop cooking area.

The center islands inset raised panel doors are the same as the oak cabinetry. However, the island was painted in white and black drawer pulls finish of the contrasting look.

Rustic barn doors are high on the top of many homeowners lists! We love the design for the walk-in pantry!

Off of the kitchen the same oak, white and rustic wood finish carries into the basement, garage and backyard exit stairwell.

The expansive entrance area is complimented by the mixed metal lighting- adding style and charm to the unique stairwell design.

Above the garage, a bonus bedroom space is peaceful on its own level of the home.

In addition to main level laundry, one master bedroom/bathroom, 2 bedrooms and a full bathroom are found at the opposite end of the home.

The master suites base and window trim are finished in white and is complete with soffit lighting and 3 accent windows.

A full master bathroom finished in white cabinetry. The marble tile and stone features are reminiscent of the backsplash and surface tops in the kitchen

Cool chrome fixtures play off of the intricate hexagon and mini subway tiling in the stand up shower.

The subway tile was carried over to the built-in tubs backsplash. We designed a large towel storage cabinet for easy access while relaxing.

These surface tops are sensational with hues ranging from white to golden to grey and blue. All tones look marvelous marbling within the 2 sink vanity.

Decorative glass knobs round out the design accents with a traditional look.

Between the Master bedroom and 2 additional rooms, a masculine bathroom is durable for all ages.

The same oak cabinets and raised panel doors are consistent with the main cabinetry on display in the home.

Decorative mosaic accents in the shower blend with the speckled vanity top, slate floor tile and trim along the bead board paneling.

Brushed nickel knobs and pulls pop against the intricate oak doors of the vanity.

The last little nook along the rambler pathway is a quaint entryway mudroom off of the garage entrance.

Oak cabinets quatersawn and stained to match will withstand anything a busy family entry area will bring through the various Minnesota seasons!

Plenty of overhead space for storage and a pocket door leading to a 1/4 bathroom add to the convenience of the space.

A bulletin board command station and walk-in closet is just what any family needs to stay organized and ready for anything!

Our entryway bench with built-in drawers maximize this area for multi-use and function.

Convenience couldn’t be more beautiful and simple.

Bronze fixtures, a lovely purple hue and decorative vanity mirror really add a lot of character in a small powder room!

Hardie siding and matching soffit and fascia are a great neutral look pairing well with the stone accents and window trim of the exterior.

Curb appeal and instant warmth greet any guest with custom pine tongue and groove, wrapped posts and front door accents.

Thank you for viewing our craftsmanship and design featured in our latest custom home.

Unique and timeless for everyday living, Franklin Builders can make your dream design a reality.
